At My Community Dental Centers (MCDC), we believe that our success is built on the collective efforts of each and every team member. To ensure that our culture reflects the values we cherish, we established the Culture Committee in 2021. This diverse group, composed of employees from all levels within the organization, plays a crucial role in enhancing internal communications and fostering a positive, inclusive workplace culture.
A Purpose-Driven Culture
The Culture Committee’s mission is simple: to promote an environment where employees feel valued, engaged, and empowered. By focusing on open communication, recognition, and engagement, the committee works tirelessly to ensure that MCDC is a place where everyone can thrive. We know that a strong, positive work culture is not something that happens overnight—it’s a continuous journey that requires input from everyone.
Key Functions of the Committee
The committee has several key responsibilities that drive our employee culture forward:
- Improving Internal Communication: Clear and transparent communication is essential for a healthy work environment and workplace culture. The Culture Committee identifies ways to improve communication across all teams and levels of the organization, ensuring that everyone is informed, involved, and able to contribute. From 2021 – 2024, our overall internal communication score has increased by 8% according to our annual all-staff survey, indicating the committee’s efforts are being well received.
- Employee Engagement and Purpose: Engaged employees are motivated, productive, and satisfied with their work. The committee’s focus is on setting goals at work that foster a sense of purpose among all team members, which is what spurred the idea: to gather the entire MCDC team from all around the state, in-person for the first time in eight years to foster connections and create a shared space for professional development. There’s something truly magical about seeing the joy of so many people who share the same passion for their work come together. When everyone feels connected to the larger purpose, we all succeed.
- Recognition and Appreciation: At MCDC, we know that recognition matters. The Culture Committee is dedicated to making sure that every team member feels appreciated. Which is why in 2022 the committee recommended the adoption of Bonusly, a recognition software that allows our team members to acknowledge and reward one another with what we refer to as “Gold Crowns” for going above and beyond to support each other and our patients. And it doesn’t stop there. From small acts of recognition and more formal initiatives, these are some of the main goals that the committee focuses on to celebrate our incredible teams’ contributions.
- Gathering Feedback: We value the input of every team member. Each year, we conduct an all-staff survey to gather feedback on employee culture, communication, and appreciation. In 2024, participants evaluated their overall job satisfaction at MCDC, yielding an average satisfaction score of 78%. They rated MCDC’s organizational culture a 3.9 out of 5, a 9.8% increase from 2022. And they rated MCDC’s recognition efforts at a 3.6 out of 5, a 7% increase from 2022. This survey allows us to assess, workplace culture, the progress we’ve made, identify areas for improvement, and collect fresh ideas to help us grow.
These increases highlight the importance of feedback, demonstrate our leadership’s commitment to action, and show that the team values seeing their input put into practice.
What’s New in 2025?
As we move into 2025, the Culture Committee is focusing on three key priorities:
- Refreshing Appreciation and Recognition: We want to take our recognition efforts to the next level. The committee is exploring new and innovative ways to reinforce our employee culture by showing our team members how much we appreciate their hard work and dedication.
- Enhancing Communication Standards: Effective communication is the backbone of workplace culture. In 2025, the committee is committed to establishing more efficient and effective communication standards that ensure the entire organization stays connected, informed, and aligned.
- Strengthening Onboarding: Great onboarding isn’t just about training—it’s the first real experience of your organization. It sets expectations, builds connections, reinforces your mission, and sets the groundwork for the new employee’s goals. We want new hires to feel welcomed and supported, so they can be more engaged, confident, and likely to stay. We believe that a strong onboarding process and goal setting with employees doesn’t just help individuals—it strengthens our entire team.
