While the goal of most patients and dentists is to ensure you don’t lose any teeth, there are times that tooth removal, also known as tooth extractions, are necessary to protect the health of your remaining teeth.
There are several situations where it becomes necessary to remove a tooth. These include the following:
Baby Teeth – Tooth Removal
For the most part, baby teeth fall out on their own without any help, but occasionally, a baby tooth can have an extra long root or a root that is misshapen that keeps it from falling out as it should. If this is the case, then it may become necessary for a dentist to remove the tooth, so the permanent tooth has the room and opportunity to erupt properly.
Decaying Teeth – Tooth Removal
If you find yourself in a situation where one of your teeth has a lot of decay, it can become necessary to have the tooth removed. This is due to the fact that the decaying tooth can actually put the teeth around it in jeopardy and put them at risk of decay as well. A bridge, partial denture, or an implant may be used to replace the missing tooth.
Additional Reasons for Tooth Removal
There are a number of other reasons a tooth may need to be removed. These include but are not limited to:
- Wisdom tooth issues
- Trauma to a tooth
- Advanced gum disease
- Orthodontic correction
