Sedation dentistry allows your doctor to provide a variety of dental treatments safely and comfortably for patients who experience anxiety when visiting the dentist. Patients who have undergone a procedure using sedation dentistry will tell you it is a simple, relaxing way to experience dentistry.
What types of sedation are offered?
- Nitrous Oxide Sedation: Often called “laughing gas”, nitrous oxide is the most frequently used method for easing mild to moderate anxiety. Nitrous oxide is an odorless gas that is administered through inhalation. Recovery is quick so you can resume your normal activities following your dental appointment.
- Oral Sedation: With oral sedation, your dentist will provide you with a prescription oral sedative that will be taken about an hour before your appointment, or as directed by your doctor. If using oral sedation, a parent, spouse or friend will be required to drive you to and from your appointment.
- Intravenous (IV) conscious sedation: Used for patients who require an advanced level of sedation for more complex procedures. With IV conscious sedation, you will remain awake throughout your procedure, but will be in a deep state of relaxation. It is required that patients who receive conscious sedation have a parent, spouse, or friend drive them to and from their appointment.
